Sixty drivers for GE in five states complete ATA's Highway Watch® trainingBANGOR, MAINE March 12, 2007 - The highways and byways in five states are safer, with help from sixty GE drivers who recently completed the American Trucking Associations' Highway Watch training program. The team of drivers is comprised of mobile mechanics, drayage drivers and other GE employees. The group operates from 10 branches of GE's Trailer Fleet Services located in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, and Pennsylvania. "Each morning, our mobile mechanics head out to perform trailer repair services at customer sites," said Siva Balakrishnan, Senior Vice President of Operations for GE. "And each mechanic drives hundreds of miles a month on regular routes. They're in a unique position to be acutely aware when they see something out of the ordinary to refer to law enforcement." Highway Watch is ATA's national safety and security program. It is designed to utilize the skill, experience, and "road smarts" of America's transportation workers to help protect the nation's critical infrastructure and the transportation of goods, services, and people. This program trains participants in identifying potential safety and security threats and avoid becoming a target of terrorists. Highway Watch is administered by ATA under a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The program requires each participant to complete an enrollment form, and watch a one-hour training video. Upon completion, each participant receives a special ID number and telephone number that they will use when suspicious activity is noticed.
